We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen of England II and offer our deepest condolences to the Royal Family and the nation as we mourn her loss.

David Sandeman, founder of EIG, was invited to meet Her Majesty back in 1977 having crossed the Atlantic the previous year singlehanded.

Inspired by Chay Blyth to set a record, at the age of 12, David decided he would attempt to cross the Atlantic East-West singlehanded and compete in the 1976 OSTAR at the age of 17.

He was not allowed to enter the race (minimum age 21) but set out from Jersey on the 5th June 1976, the same day 126 yachts set out in the race.  43 days later he sailed into Newport Rhode Island to the sound of ‘Rule Britannia’ being played by a local brass band. Of the 126 yachts that set out only around 80 made it, sadly two lives were lost.

David was added to the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest person to sail the Atlantic Solo:

"David Sandeman (UK) sailed across the Atlantic singlehandedly between Jersey, UK, and Newport, Rhode Island, USA, at the age of 17 years 176 days in the 10.67 m (35 ft) long Sea Raider in 1976. The voyage lasted 43 days"
