2020 Property Auction Market Predictions by David Sandeman

Is the ‘Hammer price’ all you pay when buying a property at auctions?

The property market is still active and innovation is thriving during lockdown.

Last week the #proptech community would have been proud as we hosted the internet bidding and live stream for O'Donnellan & Joyce Auctioneers’ Charity auction. They had 3 ‘pretend house’ charity lots and asked bidders to bid at the amount that they believed the property had been valued at. The person who lodged a bid closest to the valuation amount would win the lot, and got to select a charity of their choice for an €100 donation made by O’Donnellan & Joyce.

We asked there team how it all went on their end!

How many bidders were there?

There were 6 phone bidders live at the event. Many more had registered, with approximately  28 in total, but numbers were limited for logistical reasons. Anyone who could not take part over the phone was given the options of internet or proxy bidding. Many opted for the proxy bidding as they didn’t have a computer available at the time of the auction or were older folk who felt the phone or proxy bidding was their only options.

How many were online bidders?

There were 7 online bidders who completed the registration process and logged in to the auction.

Did bidders have to pay to take part?

Nobody had to pay to enter, however O’Donnellan & Joyce ran a social media campaign whereby they asked the public to follow them on social media and tag friends in their post. Once people had completed this task, they were sent a form to record their details and preference for bidding style.

Which charities were selected for donations by the winners?

The winner of Lot 1 has chosen to donate to Pieta House.

The winner of Lot 2 has chosen to donate to Cancer Care West, and the winner of lot 3 has chosen to donate to the  Galway Hospice.

Each of the three charities will receive a €100 donation paid by O'Donnellan & Joyce on behalf of our bidders.
